History

Year of Establishment :  December 15, 1984

History of the department : The Department of Electronic Science, University of Calcutta, was established on December 15, 1984. University Grant Commission (UGC) and Department of Electronics (DOE), Govt. of India jointly decided to introduce a 2-year M. Sc. course in Electronic Science with a view to bridge the gap between science and technology in the area of Electronics to develop Human Resources to cater the needs of both Research and Development (R & D) and Industry sectors. It is a DST-FIST and DST-PURSE Sponsored Department. The department has completed its glorious journey of 42 years with its full capacity.

Courses :

The Department of Electronic Science offers two academic programs :

  • 2-year M.Sc. in Electronic Science
The 2-year M.Sc. programme in Electronic Science is running since 1984. The orientation of this course is on high-end research and development in the area of advanced semiconductor materials, devices and circuits.
  • Department of Biochemistry along with Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology was awarded the DBT IPLS (BUILDER) Program
    (Coordinator Professor Maitrayee DasGupta)
  • 4-year B.Tech. program in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology)
The department introduced this U.G. programme from the academic session 2026-2027 and the rationale of starting this programme is the following:
  • Global semiconductor market is expanding rapidly and it is projected to cross U$1.0 trillion by 2030. Such a market will be driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G and Next-Gen Communication Networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Autonomous Vehicles, Quantum Computing etc. Interestingly, these systems are driven by the leading-edge logic nodes and require the AI-inspired hardware accelerators and high-bandwidth memories
  • Considering this, the Government of India has given special emphasis to develop semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India.
  • Accordingly, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) took initiative to launch a new B. Tech. course in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design & Technology) from the academic session 2022-23 across the country to meet the requirement of huge workforce in this field. VLSI stands for Very Large Scale Integration, leading to develop the integrated circuit (IC or chip).
  • In response, with its existing infrastructure and available expertise, the Department of Electronic Science is introducing this new B. Tech. programme. The programme has duly been approved by both the University Syndicate and AICTE.
  • The curriculum is to provide students with comprehensive education in VLSI encompassing a diverse range of subjects that are vital for their success both in research and commercial environments.
  • Internships are essential components of the curriculum as they provide students with significant industry exposure
  • The University has recently developed a state-of-the-art VLSI Design Centre.
